Gitcoin Grants Round 20: A Simplified Guide

IntermediateMay 08, 2024
Gitcoin, often referred to as the "Arsenal of Ethereum," is a donation platform for open-source software, where users can support a variety of decentralized open-source projects. Early-stage projects can also receive donations through Gitcoin to sustain their operations. This article provides an analysis of the Gitcoin donation FAQ and tutorials, helping readers to gain a deeper understanding of its working principles and project applications.
Gitcoin Grants Round 20: A Simplified Guide

Gitcoin is a donation platform targeted at open-source software, enabling users to support various decentralized open-source projects. Early-stage projects can also secure donations on Gitcoin to maintain operations. Well-known projects like Uniswap, 1inch, MaskNetwork, and ENS have participated in Gitcoin Grants, which is why Gitcoin is also known as the “Arsenal of Ethereum.” In each round of Gitcoin Grants, in addition to receiving donations from users, Gitcoin also employs a quadratic funding model to allocate funds from the Ethereum Foundation to high-quality projects. This allocation method has been endorsed by Vitalik Buterin, significantly boosting the community impact of Gitcoin Grants.

Quadratic Funding:

The Gitcoin Grants donation campaign has been conducted 19 times to date (17 rounds + Alpha Round + Beta Round), helping projects grow while also providing token airdrops and other rewards to donors, attracting more users to the Web3 world through Gitcoin. Gitcoin has been exploring more efficient ways to donate, focusing on transitioning from quadratic funding (a centralized form of matching grants) to GitcoinDAO: creating a decentralized and customizable grants protocol. Through the Gitcoin Alpha Round in January 2023 and the Gitcoin Beta Round in April 2023, Gitcoin has refined its donation methods. From April 23 to May 7, 2024, this year’s first donation event, Gitcoin Grants 20, officially begins.

Gitcoin Grants 20 Introduction

In the guides we wrote for the past few donation rounds, we introduced Gitcoin’s donation philosophy, round composition, and prize pool amounts, but as a minimalist guide, it should be as easy to read as a 140-word tweet 📖:

⏰ Gitcoin Grants 20 rounds started at 20:00 on April 23, Beijing time, and ended at 8:00 on May 8

💰 Gitcoin’s donation rounds are divided into program rounds (OSS Program rounds) and community rounds (Community Rounds). The 1 million funding for the planned round comes from the Gitcoin Foundation, and the 500,000 funding for the community round comes from partners/community self-raise.

This time Gitcoin will be donated on Arbitrum, and the user’s Passport will be automatically verified. There is no need to receive Stamp as in the past. Users with rich transaction records on the main network will receive a higher matching donation weight.

Gitcoin Grants 20 Donation FAQ

Q1: Why should I participate in Gitcoin’s donations?

A1: Donating to Gitcoin is a positive on-chain interaction. Platforms like Optimism and Celestia have used “user donations on the mainnet to Gitcoin” as one of the weights for airdrops. Donating is also a low-cost method to improve your Passport score.

Q2: How much should I donate?

A2: Although there is no limit to the amount of donation on Gitcoin, the minimum amount for each project is usually more than 1 USDC. Due to the fluctuation of ETH prices, you might consider donating in DAI; if donating in ETH, given price volatility, it is recommended to donate more than 0.0005 ETH. (Note: Some project airdrops only consider whether you have donated, while others use the amount donated as a weight factor.)

Q3: When should I make a donation?

A3: It is not advisable to donate too late, as the network can become congested during the last few days, causing you to miss the donation period. This round’s donations have automated Passport verification, so users can directly use wallets with mainnet transaction records to donate and gain weight. You can also go to Passport.gitcoin.co and connect the Eth Activity Stamp to check.

Q4: Can I use multiple accounts to donate to increase the chances of receiving an airdrop?

A4: Unfortunately, the expected profits from Gitcoin’s airdrops are not as substantial as before. Now, they are more often used as one of several weights for other project airdrops. According to this round’s sybil attack prevention guidelines, we suggest that multi-account users focus on diversity when donating. You might adopt a 2+1 donation strategy, i.e., two targeted projects plus one random project, and avoid regularity in the amount and timing of donations.

Q5: What tools can I use to view donation details?

A5: Users can use Chaineye to view project details based on donation amounts and number of donors. You can also use MiniBridge to transfer funds to the ARB chain for donating, which can greatly reduce network fees.

Gitcoin Grants 20 Donation Tutorial

Donating on Gitcoin is generally straightforward and can be broken down into three parts:

(1) Obtaining Funds

Transfer funds to Arbitrum. Here, we can use MiniBridge to transfer ETH from other chains. For small-scale interactions like those with Gitcoin, using MiniBridge can achieve faster transaction speeds and lower cross-chain fees.

(Using MiniBridge for cross-chain transfers)

(2) Choosing a Project

You can view the donation status of all sections on the donation homepage:

https://explorer.gitcoin.co

Select any section, such as Web3 Infrastructure, and you can see that there are currently 63 projects in this section, and the prize pool amount is 300,000 USDC.

(Viewing the status of various sections in the program rounds)

You can find a project to donate to by searching for its name, for example, search for 🔍 MiniBridge, then click on the shopping cart icon at the bottom right of the project, and proceed to checkout at the shopping cart in the upper right corner.

(Using search to quickly find a project to donate to)

Enter the amount you wish to donate, and you can click “Apply to all” to apply it to all chosen donation recipients. On this screen, you can see the predicted matching funds. For example, if I choose to donate 0.005 ETH, based on the current pool’s matching conditions, MiniBridge could receive a $864 match. Click submit to complete the donation! ✅

(Wallets with mainnet records can get higher weights)
