The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the development of different types of NFTs like fractional NFTs and dynamic NFTs have increased the use cases of non-fungible tokens. In this article, we discuss what xNFTs are and why they are in high demand. 
## The popularity of NFTs in 2023
With the advancement of the blockchain technology and its application in real life, NFTs have been popular. The introduction of artificial intelligence in the blockchain sector has resulted in the greater adoption of NFTs. For example, people use artificial intelligence to generate unique artwork and animations which can be converted into NFTs.

The integration of NFTs into games and the metaverse is another driver of the [demand and popularity of NFTs](https://www.gate.io/blog_detail/2286 "demand and popularity of NFTs"). Many in-game assets such as creatures, weapons and currencies are in the form of NFTs. The rising interest in blockchain based games means an increase in the demand for NFTs.

Mad lads NFT is a trending blockchain based project, known for its xNFTs. Certainly, Mad lads NFTs, also called xNFTs, are a new kind of non-fungible tokens which are more than JPEG images that exist on the blockchain.

It is worth noting that Mad lads is a slang used in England during the 2 000s which refers to crazy teenagers who would spend much of their time partying in places like pubs. Likewise, they attracted much attention due to their bizarre actions.

Therefore, Mad lads art styles provide people with a feel of the behaviours of these older generation youths as well as the type of clothing they wore. Nevertheless, the collection also comprises images of robots and alien creatures.

Basically, xNFTs represent tokenized codes that give their holders ownership rights over their executions. In other words, an xNFT holder can execute certain activities due to his/her ownership of the token. It is important to note that the Mad lads NFTs are the first collection of xNFTs.

We can view the xNFTs as applications. Specifically, the x in xNFT stands for executable, tokenized code which functions within Backpack. For instance the executable NFT allows its holder to send digital assets like airdrop to many people at once using the Backpack wallet.

Also, the Backpack wallet enables people to have multiple applications in one place. Individuals can use the xNFT as platforms for operable decentralized applications where they can access various digital assets without relying on third party software.

In other words, xNFTs act like decentralized applications that exist in the Backpack wallet where the users can develop and launch their own games, applications and other digital assets. 
## Why the Mad lads NFTs are in high demand
The executable NFTs are in demand because they give game developers, NFT artists and other users ownership rights to develop various digital products. For example, game developers can create their games which exist as xNFTs within the crypto wallet. Likewise, artists can create 3D experiences that stay in the wallet which cannot be replicated in any way. 
## Understanding Backpack wallet
As mentioned previously, the Backpack, also known as the Coral’s wallet app, is the only <a href="/price/solana-sol" target="_blank" class="blog_inner_link">Solana</a> based wallet that hosts xNFTs. In fact, Backpack is a crypto wallet that functions like MetaMask but is more advanced than it. It is unique since it is a digital wallet that also acts as an application management protocol and is the only platform where people can create executable NFTs (xNFTs).

## Delays in Madlads’s NFT minting process
The long awaited launch of the [Mad lads NFT minting scheduled](https://decrypt.co/138125/mad-lads-given-solana-nfts-new-heartbeat-after-losing-degods-coral-ceo "Mad lads NFT minting scheduled") to take place on 7 PM ET on 20 April was delayed by a day due to some technical challenges.

In fact, this delay was caused by too much traffic on the Backpack wallet where the minting process was supposed to take place. According to a source, billions of requests routed through the Backpack crypto wallet, resulting in a Distributed Denial of Service [(DdoS) attack](https://www.gate.io/bitwiki/detail/152/distributed-denial-of-service-attack--ddos-attack "(DdoS) attack").

In simple terms, a DdoS attack occurs when there is an attempt to block the normal traffic to a server or network. We can compare them to highway traffic jams that slow down the movement of traffic.

At times the DdoS is caused by networks that have malware which are controlled by bad actors. Such devices that may slow down the network are called bots which send requests to a network.

Therefore, there were too many requests that slowed down Backpack and Mad lads systems causing network outages. This high demand might have been caused by too many signups on the Backpack wallet app which supports the Mad lads NFT collection.

To overcome this challenge the Mad lads team deployed a honeypot trap which lured the bots that wanted to automate the mints. In the end, the system took the <a href="/price/solana-sol" target="_blank" class="blog_inner_link">Solana</a> tokens (SOL) which the bot intended to use during the minting process. However, the team returned the SOL after the completion of the minting process. 
## Conclusion
The Mad lads [NFT minting process](https://www.gate.io/blog_detail/510 "NFT minting process") was delayed by 24 hours following too much traffic on the Backpack crypto wallet. Nevertheless, the minting continued after the Mad lads team trapped the bots that automated the process.
