Gate Ventures, the venture capital arm of Gate.io, is focusing on investments in decentralized infrastructure, ecosystems. In January 2022, Gate Ventures took part in two rounds of financing plans successfully.
Investment in SEBA Bank
Gate Ventures has taken part in SEBA Bank’s $119M Series C round as a consortium member with Altive. SEBA Bank, founded in 2018 and headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, is a FINMA-licensed bank that offers digital banking, trading, and custody services for institutional investors and HNWIs.
A more recent benchmark is Sygnum. A digital asset company licensed in Singapore and Switzerland. Last week, Sygnum announced a $120m Series B round at a post-money valuation of over $1 billion. The proceeds will boost Sygnum’s development of institutional-grade services. Gate Ventures believe it is the right time to invest in digital banks like SEBA. By introducing more banking service providers to crypto, institutional adoption will grow 100x in 3 years. And by facilitating more bridges between TradFi and open finance, the Valhalla of mass adoption shall come true in time!
Investment in SOMA.finance
Gate Ventures has participated as a key investor in SOMA.finance’s $6.5M Seed round with Animoca Brands, Kenetic Capital, and others. SOMA is the first fully SEC-licensed decentralized exchange (DEX) for trading digital assets and compliant digital securities.
SOMA aims to be a fully compliant product suite for institutions and retail investors. SOMA’s proposed services include KYC and AML functions, digital asset trading, and permission-less regulated automated market-making (AMM). As the first step, SOMA will launch with 20–30 tokenized equities, ETFs, crypto assets, and STOs, with more products to be added next. Via SOMA, investors can trade across all asset classes in a P2P and decentralized fashion, without having centralized order books that usually open doors to potential market manipulation. It is a must for regulators to safeguard both institutions and retail investors, but it is also critical to create a supportive environment where the poor, the SMEs, or anyone who cannot meet the standards of the existing centralized financial system. The dilemma in fully realizing the potential of Defi comes down to balancing these two opposing ends of the spectrum.
