    One of the most intriguing and widespread developments in technology and the world in general right now is "cryptocurrency." Although this concept was born in the late 2000s, it came to life in the 2010s and is still present in the 2020s, with a view of existing and progressing as time goes on.

    You may then wonder, what is cryptocurrency?

    Meaning of Cryptocurrency

    Cryptocurrency is a currency that exists in digital (computerized) format. It is called crypto because it comes with;

    • Cryptographic codes: This code utilizes intricate algorithms to prevent unverified crypto coin creation.
    • Cryptographic keys: They are private & public keys used to decrypt and encrypt transactions.

    Cryptocurrency is operated via blockchain technology, a digital format that is decentralized, private, accessible, secure, and conducts transactions via a peer-to-peer system. You can look at blockchain as an imaginary and endless connection of computer servers without a central authority. The blockchain is the most integral part of cryptocurrency as it is the framework on which it exists.

    More than just a digital currency, cryptocurrency is a digital payment system that authorizes different transactions in various places safely and efficiently. Some of the most popular types of cryptocurrency include Bitcoin, Ether, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Cardano.

    With crypto, you have ease when making transactions, security, and complete ownership instead of traditional money (fiat such as Euro, US Dollar, etc.). However, since crypto remains a relatively new system with high price volatility, it is not entirely accepted as a payment medium globally.

    Crypto's benefits far outweigh its drawbacks. It provides financial freedom for its users, which has never previously existed. This is evidenced in the healthy numbers cryptocurrency boasts of.

    How Many People Use Cryptocurrency?

    Since Bitcoin came out as the first crypto coin in 2009, cryptocurrency has grown in leaps and bounds.

    Currently, more than 300 million people use crypto, with 6000 + types of crypto coins and more than 200 crypto exchanges - with Gate.io being one of the most prominent ones.

    On a more niched level, there is a higher proportion of males in the crypto ecosystem than females. A reported 16% of crypto owners are males, with female owners in the 7% category - less than half of their male counterparts.

    This low number is what has inspired more women in the crypto world. There are now female influencers at the forefront of this vanguard to encourage more participation and visibility.
