    2. Cryptopunks

    1. Bored Ape Yacht Club

The very first NFT was minted in October of 2014. Under the crypto project “Namecoin,” digital artist Kevin McCoy created the Quantum NFT image. Although the novel digital art did not take off, it created the pathway for literally thousands - if not millions - of NFT projects that would come years later.

Although there is a nearly uncountable number of successful NFT projects, only the top 10 NFT collections are making this list - these are the collections that make the waves across the financial ecosystems.

So what are these NFT projects, and where are they from? In this article, we provide a list of the top ten most popular NFT collections, with a brief summary of their conception.

    10. Meebits

    Source: Crypto Pump News

From the same group who created the Cryptopunks (more on them later), Meebits are 20,000 unique Voxel 3D characters in the Ethereum blockchain. Based on the ERC-721 token, like most on this list, Meebits do not have transactional fees and grant users a portion of the copyright of the Meebits enterprise.

Founded in May of 2021, merely a year ago Cryptopunks’ Larva Labs created the Meebits with one main goal in mind; to hope that these AI-generated characters can be used as metaverse and VR avatars in the near future. At the time of writing, Meebits’ market cap was $211 million dollars.

    9. Doodles

    Source: NFT Now

A very recent project, Doodles is an NFT collection of 10,000 randomly-generated characters created by software developers and digital artists Evan Keast, Scott Martin and Jordan Castro in October of 2021. The main goal of the Doodles collection is to create a thriving community of NFT enthusiasts through investments, merchandise, community events and new applications to the Doodles world. Each Doodles owner gets to use its unique ERC-721 file to vote on updates and new developments in the community. At the time of this writing, Doodles held a market cap of $368 million dollars.

    8. Azuki

    Source: Money Times

The Azuki NFT collection consists of 10,000 unique NFTs that give holders access to “The Garden,” the Azuki community center where developers and holders build content, merchandise and events together. Contrary to most collections, Azuki labels itself as a brand which seeks to create physical articles of clothing that can also be converted 3D worlds. Speaking of which, Azuki is now in the process of creating its very own Metaverse, currently in its closed Alpha version. At the time of writing, the collection had a market cap of $377 million dollars.

    7. Moonbirds

Moonbirds is an NFT collection of 10,000 unique characters that give holders abilities and different levels of access to the Moonbirds community. Through a process called “nesting” (like staking), the more an investor holds a Moonbird NFT, the more access to perks features they have. Moonbirds also provide players with access to the PROOF metaverse, currently developing its Highrise project; an editable virtual building. At the time of writing, Moonbirds NFT collection held a market cap of approximately $393 million dollars.

    6. LAND

    Source: Beyond Games

LAND is the NFT token for the Sandbox metaverse (SAND), where users are able to buy and trade assets such as items, clothing, gear and most importantly parcels of virtual real estate. With the Sandbox company being created in 2012 long before it went the blockchain metaverse route, Sandbox created a fully editable, player-based metaverse where users are able to make their own adventures, buy virtual land and create businesses within a community with a local economy. At the time of writing, the LAND NFT collection held a market cap of approximately $400 million dollars, under 140 thousand unique NFTs (with an unlimited minting cap).

    5. Otherdeed for Otherside

    Source: MPost

Considered the most successful NFT collection at Launch, Otherdeed for Otherside reached OpenSea’s top 10 collections in under 24 hours - causing a temporary blackout of the platform. Created by BAYC’s Yuga Labs and released on April 30th of 2022 (very recently), OFO is basically an MMORPG online game that connects to the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem. In their official files, developers explained that they created OFO as a means to expand the Bored Ape universe, while also providing new access to people who cannot afford a Bored Ape. Currently with 96 thousand unique tokens in the form of lands and playable characters, Otherdeed for Otherside has a market cap of $539 million dollars.

    4. CloneX

    Source: Moonpay

The only NFT project on this list that hasn’t been released yet, CloneX are 20.000 NFT avatars that are still in the pre-sale phase of the project. With design partnerships with major artists such as Takashi Murakami, CloneX seeks to create a fully customizable metaverse where CloneX characters act as avatars within the ecosystem. In this virtual world, avatars will be able to wear and trade several items such as clothing and wearables, while also interacting and hanging out in their own Space Pods; CloneX’s virtual land. Even before its official launch, pre-sale results for CloneX raked in a whopping $544 million dollars.

    3. Mutant Ape Yacht Club

    Source: Today’s Crypto News

Developed by Bored Ape’s Yuga Labs, Mutant Ape Yacht Club are NFT variables of the BAYC characters, where owners are able to provide Bored Apes through a minting process that makes them… mutant! Under 20,000 unique characters as BAYC, Bored Ape holders received airdrops of what was called the “mutant serum,” a token used to cause the mutation. The collection has twice the amount of Bored Ape Yacht Club because different serums cause different reactions, including creating the mutant persona without burning its original NFT. Currently, MAYC has a massive market cap of approximately $771 million dollars.

    2. Cryptopunks

    Source: Money Times

The first official NFT collection ever, created in 2017, and definitely the most recognizable one in mainstream media, Cryptopunks consists of 10,000 unique NFT characters with different AI-generated attributes. Developed by Larva Labs, Cryptopunks don’t have a practical use such as being a governance token or gaining access to any official community; its market interest lies in the fact that it generated the mega NFT ecosystem that we know today. Also, each person can only own a single Cryptopunk, which makes the collection even more desirable. At the time of writing, the Cryptopunk NFT collection had a market cap of whopping $1.13 billion dollars.

    1. Bored Ape Yacht Club

    Source: Vulcan Post

The first place goes to Bored Ape Yacht Club, the chosen NFT collection of major celebrities like Neymar, LeBron James, Post Malone and many more. Created by Yuga Labs, the BAYC came out in April of 2021 with 10,000 uniquely generated avatars of different apes with exclusive qualities features. Not only does Bored Apes give you access to an exclusive community with top secret events, it also allows the owners to use their owned apes with commercial usage - lending the NFT to develop products based on their exclusive art and profit from it. With major hype and celebrity acquisitions across the globe, plus the perks from the rights, it’s no wonder that Bored Ape Yacht Club is the most popular NFT collection. It’s market cap currently stands at a staggering $1.95 billion dollars.
