EPIC GAMES RESPOND TO MINECRAFT BAN OF NFTs

09 August 13:44

Popular (Massive Multiplayer Online Game) MMO game Minecraft has recently banned NFT games and blockchain technologies from running on their platform due to the scarcity it creates, leading to an unequal gaming experience for players. Epic Games responds to this move by admitting that the company is well within its rights to do so, and players can also freely pick which games they decide to play… Learn more in the body of the article.

WHY DID MINECRAFT BAN NFTs?

Earlier this month, the developers of Minecraft at Mojang studios released in a
blog post that they had banned the use of NFTs and blockchain technologies from their app to ensure that players could have a safe and inclusive experience. In the post, they cited that NFTs create scarcity, promote exclusion, and expose players to potential rug-pulls. The developers believe that NFTs make it hard for players to derive Joy from the game as they become driven by the prospect of making a profit.

Although they went on to say that they will be monitoring blockchain technologies to see if they can be implemented into Minecraft in the future, players and corporations alike had their thoughts on the decision.

EPIC GAMES RESPOND TO THE BAN?

Tim Sweeney
, CEO of Epic Games, when asked on Twitter why Epic Games Store didn't get rid of games that banned NFTs, said that each game developer reserves the right to build their game however they see fit, just as players were also free to pick which games they played. "I believe stores and operating systems makers should not interfere by forcing their views onto others." So Epic Games will not either. He replied.

The video game company Epic Games had repeatedly taken this stand when met with situations of NFT bans from gaming applications, as the company showed when Steam CEO Gabe Newell banned games containing NFTs and blockchain technologies from the Steam platform by
agreeing almost immediately after to continue hosting such games in the Epic Games Store.

HOW ARE PLAYERS AFFECTED BY EPIC GAMES CHOICE?

Some users were not pleased with Tim Sweeney's opinion and openly expressed it, with one user saying that, by supporting Epic Games Store, they were actively supporting a platform for games built on scams and negative impacts. While some players and users of both platforms seemed to disagree with him, many others supported him with their comments.

Minecraft happens to be the most successful video game and virtual world gaming platform yet, and its recent ban displaced a large number of NFT projects, including NFT Worlds, which vowed to develop its own Minecraft-like game but better as a kind of rebound. Minecraft developers' decision caused an uproar from NFT communities. Epic Games, on the other hand, has shown a firm resolve to keep hosting games containing NFTs regardless of companies that believe they are harmful.
